Tour Down Under: Finn Fisher-Black takes podium finish on first day of GC battle

The 147.5km stage to Uraidla was set to be a test for the climbers, and the demanding course delivered just that. Red Bull BORA - hansgrohe rose to the occasion, once again demonstrating superb teamwork as they navigated the challenges of the day. With the terrain progressively ramping up, the team made sure that its GC rider was well-positioned. Taking control of the race dynamics, the squad pushed the pace at the front in the decisive phase of the race aiming to keep Finn Fisher-Black positioned safely at the sharp end of proceedings ensuring he had the best possible chance of performing on the tough ascents of Knotts Hill ahead.

As the peloton hit the base of Knotts Hill, the attacks came thick and fast, but the New Zealand rider responded and managed to stay within the group of key contenders. As the riders neared the final climb, Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, with Ben Zwiehoff and Laurence Pithie, set the pace and brought Fisher-Black into a good position to launch his bid for a top finish. In the final stretch, Fisher-Black’s positioning paid off as he surged to a strong third place on the finish line. This result moved him firmly into contention for the overall classification, where he now sits in fourth place ahead of tomorrow’s stage. Teammate Sam Welsford continues to lead the sprint classification.

Finn Fisher-Black:

It was a much anticipated day today, especially knowing beforehand that it would be a crucial GC stage. The intensity was high, and there was no moment to relax. The team did an excellent job of keeping me at the front throughout the day, with everyone playing a key role. In the final lap, Danny did an incredible job getting over the last climb, and then Laurence and Ben ensured that I was perfectly positioned heading into the final ascent. I started the last climb in fifth wheel, which gave me the ideal setup to focus on my effort. From there, it was all about following the wheels and seeing what I could do in the finale.
